BAFA LAKE

Lake Bafa Nature Reserve is an important rescue for flora and fauna. So the Lake became the status of a Nature Reserve. In the surrounding area of Lake Bafa and the Meander Delta over 250 kinds of birds can bee watched.

With its 60 species of orchids, only 20 species on our ground, and the very naturaly olive gorwths with many flowers in spring it is also a favorite for botanists and birdwatchers. But we have also zoologists, luminologs and other groups.

The area is interesting for Photographers, Animal Photographers, Painting Groups which enjoy the unspoilt nature and silence far away from the rush of mass tourism. Also for fasting hiking, biblical or christian studies are a lot places to visit for.

So we can say, that Lake Bafa is the ideal location for visiting the Southaegean area. The distances to such important places like Ephesus, Miletus or Priene is so near, that You dont have to waste Your time in driving and have more time for reflecting the places You visit.

Bafa Lake History

The magic flair of Lake Bafa and the Latmos Mountains is best told with the myth of Endymion:

Endymion was a shepard just leading his sheep flock trough the byzarre rocks of the Mount Latmos. But he played his flute so well, that Selene the Godness of the Monn fall in love to him. But the Godfather Zeus also felt in love to him and got jeleaus to Selene. So he intrigued against Selene and dammed him to infinite sleep and eternal youth. But Selene found her lover sleeping in the Mount Latmos and every time when the moon was full she climed down and made love with him. So they say that Selene gave birth to 50 daughters and also today when the moon is full it is like the Moon kisses the Latmos...

The Mount Latmos was also known as the Old Man of the Mount Latmos, which was a wild weather godness. The origin of the cult is not known, but in the Latmos Mountains are several ancient Cultcenters.
The biggest place is Gerga which is totaly unique and not very good described up to now. Gerga was also a pure holy place with no settlement. The most noticeable building is the Temple which is build in stone, but constructed like an wooden temple. On over 50 places Gerga is written on rocks in the area. Also noticeable are different stones resembling menhirs. But up to today nobody knows when and how long this place was used.

Other places not good described yet are a cultplace behind the Latmos Mountains near to the village Bağırcık and an other one in Ekiztaş. Both places contain a very big stone, from the form like menhirs, with steps leading onto the top. But nobody knows more about this. But also the location of Labranda in the same mountains emphasize the importance of the Mount Latmos in the prehellenistic era. An other proof is that on a sarkophag from Roman time is a figure of the Old Man of the Mount Latmos. And Romans were known that they integrated the godnesses of the cultures they opressed. There are many interesting questions reaching up to the prehistoric times to be answered in this region.
